Canine volunteer
Nelson Centre
Do you love dogs? Volunteers in this role work with our canines and help clean, feed and care for the dogs at the centre.
Help us improve the lives of dogs in our care.
Volunteers must be confident and capable of handling dogs who come in all shapes and sizes. Some of these dogs come to us with little or no training. Work in our canine area includes cleaning the dog pens and the dog exercise yard, walking, feeding, providing toys, attention, socialising and training.
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Personal time commitment: one shift once a week or fortnight for a minimum of 6 months.
- Training: you will receiving training while on-the-job during your shift.
- Experience: to work with in the canine area previous experience with dogs is preferred.
- Tasks: feeding, socialising, walking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, helping with odd jobs if time allows etc.
Shift times are as follows:
Monday – Sunday (8:15am – 10:45am / 12pm – 2pm / 2:30pm – 4:30pm) *the finishing times may vary

To get started, just fill out the form below. If you need help, please call the team at your local SPCA Centre or op shop.
A few things to note:
- You must be at least 15 to volunteer in our Op Shops.
- You must be at least 16 to volunteer at our Centres. If you are younger, please check out our sections on 'Volunteering for Kids', 'Volunteering from Home' or talk to your family about fostering opportunities.
- You may need to provide an up to date Ministry of Justice check during this process, and we'll ask about any medical conditions so we can ensure your safety while volunteering.
